NOVEMBER 2024 – MOM2MOMS
There is one special day a year, when we all go back to our traditions, history, and childhood, when mom adds turkey to the table with a huge assortment of everyone’s favorites: sweet potatoes, pumpkin and apple pies, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole. Dad starts carving the bird with his large knife. The whole family, grandparents, aunts and uncles are impatiently waiting to take a seat at the table and for the gluttony to start. God bless this day and God bless the Pilgrims who began this day of Thanksgiving.
There is a small minus associated with this holiday as it involves a lot of planning and preparation. We ladies start planning weeks and weeks prior. We start with a long grocery list. Then we do the shopping, and once we get home, a lot of the ingredients we’ve bought don’t even fit into the fridge. Meanwhile, the family has to eat either leftovers or pizza, because who has time to cook!
Sometimes as we start cooking, we just realized that one of the main ingredients for one of the main dishes was not purchased, and then it’s off to the store we go. On Thanksgiving Day, the family is starting to arrive, watching the Macy’s Parade, then a National Dog Show, but for the cooks, there is no time to chill, breaking a cold sweat, we are in frenzy finishing up everything prior to seating down, just like on the show “Chopped.”
At the table, as everyone is complimenting you on how tasty everything is, you must trust them because you really have no desire to eat, as you have helped yourself to enough, tasting while prepping, and plus you are simply worn out. “Not doing this next year,” you say. But really, who are you kidding?
So, the caveat is that no one is asking you to reject the holiday or its traditions, but how about shortening the list and perhaps asking the kids to set the table up a night before, or better yet, delegate with a TO-DO list to a few family members. Why not? Everyone wants to see your beautiful, smiling face and you want to taste food with everyone else at the table. Thanksgiving is only once a year. CELEBRATE IN GOBBLE, GOBBLE WAY!
La Dolce Vita!!
Until next month!
