The Fifth Annual Olé 5K Race By: Paula Green

Ole5K-1 Ole5K-3  Ole5K-2        The Spanish word olé means bravo or hooray, it is simply a way of expressing excitement.  Since its inception in 2009, the Olé 5K Race has generated enthusiastic crowds.  This year’s fundraiser will be held at 10 a.m., April 13, at North Park and it benefits the Anna Seethaler Hospital in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Back in 1999, Father Scott Seethaler was visiting some friends in Oaxaca, which is the third poorest state in the country.  During his stay, it became very apparent to him that there was an urgent need for quality health in this impoverished region in Mexico.  On the final day of his visit, he committed himself to building a medical clinic to serve the poor who were coming in large numbers to the capital with the dream of making a better life for themselves.

It took one year to build the facility which opened in Nov. 2000, as a clinic and later expanded to a full service hospital.  The project was financed through the generous donations of many benefactors.  It was named after Father Scott’s mother who was a great inspiration in his life.

Some of the patients travel six hours to the hospital to receive quality care, which serves approximately 1,800 patients a month.  During any given year, the hospital will treat as many as 300 patients who are so poor that they are unable to pay a peso for their treatment.Ole5K-4

The annual Olé 5K is held to raise much needed funds for this Mexican hospital.  Your donations will help provide free or reduced care to the patients of Oaxaca.

This year’s race features the “best post-race fiesta in the Burgh” with a Mexican buffet, prizes, raffle baskets, music and more surprises.  If you register by Mar. 19, you can take advantage of the early pricing, which is $20 (with a guaranteed t-shirt) after Mar. 19, the cost is $25 (t-shirt while supplies last).  Family discount pricing (for members living in the same house) is available.

The race will begin adjacent to Harmar Grove at Pie Traynor in North Park (behind the swimming pool).  To register, visit http://www.ole5K.com.   Sponsors are needed for the race as well.  For information on sponsorship, call (412) 367-2428 or email keithbish@verizon.net.
