Peoples Gas Holiday Market Returns Even Bigger and Brighter

Due to the outstanding success of last year’s holiday market, Peoples Natural Gas, together with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and the Colcom Foundation, are bringing the old world charm and one-of-a-kind shopping experience back this holiday season with People Gas Holiday Market. It returns to Market Square in Downtown Pittsburgh, beginning on November 23rd and continues daily through December 23rd. Last year the Peoples Gas Holiday Market brought 5,000-7,000 visitors a day during the week and 10,000-15,000 a day on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Therefore, the Holiday Market has been increased in size to include even more unique vendors.  Modeled after the original Christkindlmarkt that was created in 1545 in Nuremberg, Germany, the Peoples Gas Holiday Market is only one of three of its kind in North America.

What you will find at the Peoples Gas Holiday Market is that regional, national and international vendors set up shop in European-style wooden chalets adorned with holly and illuminated with little white lights and feature gifts from around the world. At the market, you will find unique, quality gifts, collectibles and treasures from countries as far away as Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Russia/Ukraine and many more. While you stroll through the market, shopping amongst the lovely chalets and charming gift ideas, you will also be entertained daily from Noon – 2:00 and 5:00-7:00 by our regional, ethnic, cultural and community groups.
The chalet “Little Bavaria” will be offering such delicacies as apple cider, strudels, dumplings and soft pretzels. In addition, all the restaurants surrounding the square will be open and featuring their special cuisines to satisfy the hungriest of shoppers.
Santa himself has been so impressed with the Peoples Gas Holiday Market that he has even moved into his own Santa’s House in the market. It is over 600 sq. ft. and is complete with fireplace, Christmas tree and holiday spirit to enchant children of all ages. Bring a non-perishable food item or make a cash donation benefiting the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and have your picture taken with Santa. Santa is looking to top last year’s record of $30,000 in donations to the food bank and hopes you’ll come visit him in his Santa’s House to make it happen.
For those traveling from the North Hills area, an alternate and convenient way to get to the market is to avoid parking in Downtown. Instead, park on the NorthShore and then take the T for one stop to GatewayCenter. The Peoples Gas Holiday Market is only a two-minute walk from the Gateway stop to Market Square.

The market will open on Saturday, Nov. 23, and will be open seven days a week through Monday, Dec. 23. Hours are Monday – Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on the Peoples Gas Holiday Market, visit and click on the Peoples Gas Holiday Market button.
