Interview Q & A: Owners, Double Wide Grill Mars/Cranberry Twp, Scott Kramer & Steve Zumoff

Doublewide_DSC_0123

SusanWhere are you both from originally?

Scott– I’m from Squirrel Hill and my business partner Steve is from Harrisburg. We met in college at Pitt. I was a Business major with a minor in Art and Steve has a degree in Psychology.

SusanWhaSONY DSCt made you go into the restaurant business?

Steve– I managed a bar called Zelda’s Greenhouse in Oakland, so I knew a fair amount about the bar business. Both of us were regulars at Grateful Dead night at Thirsty’s, also in Oakland, so one night, we decided to quit our jobs and the two of us and another friend went cross-country on tour with the Dead. We were 23 years old. We talked business the whole time and when we saw coffee shops in Chicago we immediately realized there was an open market in Pittsburgh. Then we did a lot of research and opened a 60’s themed coffee house, The Beehive in South Side.

SONY DSCSusan- What was your next project?

Steve- In 1996 we opened The Lava Lounge. The theme is a cocktail bar set in a retro 007 spy movie set. Sort of a retro high-tech secret chamber built into the side of a volcano.  It has to be the most unusual bar in the city!

Susan- Another bar you own, The Tiki Lounge, is also retro.

Scott – Yes, as a kid I went to the Mona Loa in Monroeville. It was a tiki themed restaurant. Steve and I liked the concept and began our research.  We decided to travel to Bali where we worked with Artisans and a translator for 3 weeks, eventually all the décor was shipped back and installed. It’s still a very busy property.

Susan- Next up is the Double Wide Grill. How did you come up with this theme?

Scott- The Theme is a Gas station turned restaurant in a Texas Border town. The menu is BBQ, Southern and some Mexican. We did our research in Austin and Houston. Steve and I thought the restaurant business would be an interesting new challenge compared to the bar business. Both of us are food and quality driven. I’m a vegetarian and like to travel a lot. When I taste different dishes during my trips, I often re-create it in our restaurant. Everything is from scratch.

Susan- So now you’re in Mars/Cranberry?

Steve-Yes, We were looking for a new location and knew of the growth here, so we decided to plant some roots. We have now been open for nine months. We are really proud of this location and love the family-feel in comparison to our other properties.

The Mars/Cranberry location offers a kids menu as well as a special kids section equipped with games for all ages.  They also offer gluten free, vegetarian and vegan food.  With over 40 craft beers, everyone is sure to find something they love.  Join them Saturday nights at 10:30pm for karaoke or simply relax outside, on what is known as the “Best Outdoor Seating” in the area.
