A Fabulous Fresh Face—5 At-home Quick Tips

Kelly Jan articleBy Kelly A. Smith

The holidays are over and perhaps you were one of the many that indulged in a bit too much merriment.  Many of us are conditioned to think that holidays allow for, and even wait for that “green-light” to eat, drink, and be merry… in excess. I’ll admit, it’s hard to say no to that chubby little snowman cut-out cookie, aloof smile included, almost tempting you to take a bite. And who can turn their back on that tray of those perfectly portioned cheese cubes paired with that glass or two of wine?  Indeed, this is the time of year that most of us throw our diet to the wind and partake in what is basically a month-long calorie-fest. But not only does this behavior put on the pounds quickly, it can also wreak havoc on your face and skin.  Whether you’re having issues with puffiness, dark, under-eye circles, or dull, dry skin, there’s no reason to seek costly beauty quick fixes that have no guarantee of actually working.  Here, I will share with you a few tricks of the trade, many of which are used by beauty experts.  The best part is, these products can be found right in your own kitchen.

Facial cleanser- Java-style Yes, you read that right.  Ground coffee is an excellent facial exfoliate!  Just mix a few tablespoons with warm water and apply in circular motions with a soft cloth.  Your skin will be instantly brightened!

 Puffy/tired eyes:

For immediate results, frozen cucumbers are the first go-to fruit.  You can also use frozen strawberries, as their natural bleaching properties will also reduce dark circles, as will sliced potatoes.

 Beauty masks

Using a fresh berry mask containing fruits rich with anti-oxidants will get you that “fresh-face” that you’re looking for.  Try combining blueberries, strawberries, cranberries and raspberries.  Not only will your skin look great, it will smell delicious too!

 Citrus Mint Toner

This is one of my favorites and can be made with ease!  Any stimulating herb will provide aromatherapy, but a no-fail recipe includes the leaves of peppermint, spearmint, and lemon and orange rinds. Boil all ingredients together, and once cooled, apply over face and neck.  Your face will tingle with refreshment!

 Must-Have Moisturizer

Avocado mask-the avocado, rich with essential vitamins and minerals, works wonders to hydrate the skin.  Simply scrape the fleshy inside off the skins and mash into a creamy texture making sure to apply to face and neck.  Leave on for about 15 minutes, and then gently rinse with cool water.  Then presto!  Rejuvenated skin double time!  For very dry skin, add a few drops of pure virgin olive oil.

Good skin care and good health habits go hand-in-hand.  It’s okay to indulge in that occasional cookie – just make sure it doesn’t have a cute smiling face tempting you again.
