Summer is just around the corner, which means it will soon be time to get out your bathing suit. Will you be ready, or will you use the same excuses you did last year to avoid being seen in a bathing suit?

This year can be different! Incorporate these tips from the team at Defined Fitness that they use everyday to get their clients into the best shape of their lives.

  1. Lift Some Weight. Spending hours on the treadmill or walking in the park will not get you the sexy body you desire. In fact, high amounts of cardio have actually been shown to promote fat gain. Instead, switch your focus to weight training. To get your body to change you need to stimulate muscle tissue, which is what happens when you lift weights. Weight training will recruit more muscle fibers than cardio training, which means a greater calorie burn and a bigger boost to the metabolism giving you that lean, toned, and sculpted body you’ve been looking for.
  2. Get On Your Feet. All those fancy weight machines look nice, but they are not giving you the most effective workout. Most people spend most of their day sitting, resulting in poor posture and muscle imbalances. So why should you sit when you exercise? Instead, get up on your feet when you workout. This will incorporate more muscles and gets the muscles of the core involved, resulting in more calories burned. Training repetitively on weight machines can also lead to injuries, because rather than allowing your body to move the way it was designed to move the machines force you to move the way they are designed.
  3. 3.     Let Your Body Recover. Spending hours in the gym everyday does not get you better results. You need to give your body time to recover from each workout. We see the best results with clients who workout three days per week for about 45 minutes per session.  Anymore than this, and you are compromising your results. Now, this does not mean to be a slug and lay on the couch the other four days of the week, it just means that you should only be working out hard three days. On your other days, try to incorporate some light activity such as walking, yoga, yard work or gardening, or just playing with the kids outside.
  4. 4.     Add Variety. A common mistake many people make working out is they do the same thing every time they go to the gym. While this may work for a short period of time, it is not going to keep improving the way your body looks. This is why you need to constantly mix up your workout. Try different exercises, change the number of sets and reps you do, lift heavier weight, and challenge yourself a little each time.
  5. 5.     Say Goodbye to Breads and Pasta. Yes, we all love our carbs; however, we don’t love when they are deposited as fat on our hips, thighs and stomach. By changing up how you eat and replacing the carbs with lean meats, vegetables, and fruits the pounds melt off revealing a body you never knew you had.

Have you been working out for a while, but not seeing results? Have you never exercised before or it’s been a long time?
